Theft Suspect Arrested Twice

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that recently, Deputy Seth Negel took a theft report from the Point Store in West Point where milk and motor oil were stolen. An image from a security camera at the store was able to capture an image of the vehicle used by the suspect to get away.
Later that evening Fayette County Communications received a 911 call from the T-Mobile store in La Grange in reference to a suspicious person in their store causing the employee to be frightened. The employee was able to relay information to Fayette County Communications that made them believe the suspicious person was possibly the suspect wanted from the West Point Store Theft.
The Fayette County Narcotics unit was already in the area and responded to the location. The Narcotics Unit located the suspect at the location in a spray painted blue vehicle that matched the description used in the earlier theft. The suspect Jeff Romero, 38 of Austin was then detained. The LaGrange Police Department and Deputy Nagel then arrived and assisted the Narcotics Unit. A probable cause search of the vehicle was then conducted due to drug paraphernalia being in plain view. The Narcotics Unit then located the stolen milk and oil from the store inside the vehicle. Also located inside the vehicle was approximately 1.5grams of methamphetamine. Romero was then placed into custody for possession of a controlled substance. Deputy Nagel found the vehicle to be displaying a fake temporary plate and ran the vehicle by VIN through communications. Communications confirmed the vehicle was stolen. Nagel then charged Romero with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and transported him to the Dan R. Beck Center.
Then, Deputy Mark Zimmerman observed a vehicle leaving the Texaco gas station next to the sheriff's office with the gas pump still attached to the vehicle. Zimmerman the conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on State Highway 71 near Highway 77. The Vehicle was identified as a 2006 Ford Passenger Car. At the same time a 911 call was by a women in reference to her vehicle being stolen from the same Texaco gas station. The victim advised that her car was a grey Ford Fusion. Zimmerman observed that the two vehicles matched and detained the driver of the vehicle. The Vehicle Zimmerman ha stopped was confirmed to be the victim's vehicle. The driver, identified as Jeff Romero who had just been bonded out of jail was placed back into custody and transported back to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center. The Victim's vehicle was then returned to her. The Fayette County Narcotics Unit arrived at the scene and took over the investigation and spoke with the victim and charged Romero with Robbery due to causing bodily injury to the victim.
