Suspect arrested for Murder of Bastrop 19 year old
In February, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office responded to a deceased individual call in northeast Bastrop, Texas. Upon arrival, a 19-year-old female was found in her bed unresponsive and was pronounced dead. A search of the room yielded a small white powdery substance that was later confirmed to be fentanyl.Due to the nature of the death the BCSO Narcotics Unit began an investigation to determine how the deceased female came into possession of the fentanyl. Under a relatively new state law a person can be prosecuted for Murder if a person furnishes fentanyl to someone who later dies from a fentanyl overdose.
An autopsy was performed, and the main cause of death was confirmed as an overdose from fentanyl. Investigators discovered that the deceased had gone to the Austin area to buy fentanyl the night before she died and Investigators were able to identify the suspect that sold the fentanyl. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Alba Karina Canales, who was found to have a history of drug usage and trafficking.
Since Canales was found to have furnished fentanyl to a person who died from its’ use, a murder warrant was issued for her arrest. Canales was subsequently arrested on the Bastrop County Murder warrant in Williamson County and found to be in possession of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics. Canales is currently in the Bastrop County jail in lieu of a $100,000.00 bond.
